DVD Review: The Phantom of the Opera: Collector's Edition
May 14, 2005 - Lynn Barker
You know the story; 19th Century Paris, beautiful opera singing ingénue Christine (Emmy Rossum) is coached by a mysterious mentor (the Phantom, Gerard Butler) and upstages the Paris opera house diva Carlotta (Minnie Driver) while falling for a recently re-met childhood sweetheart Raoul (Patrick Wilson). Phantom wants her and causes all kinds of evil doings in an effort to keep his "angel of music" to himself. The movie was expanded from the ultra-successful musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The film is out on DVD in two editions, one, on two discs with special features and one without. This is the one "with".
Video: This DVD looks magnificent. The widescreen is the only way to go with such a lavish production. Colors look crisp, vibrant and detailed whether the dark hues of backstage or the Phantom's lair or the brighter, on stage opera lighting or costumes. A really good transfer to DVD.
Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 format really blasts the wonderful songs and lush orchestrations at you. Great separation between speakers and all musical performances are crystal clear, strong and balanced. For the first time, a huge symphony orchestra plays the score rather than the much more limited musical accompaniments in the various world-wide stage productions and it's glorious. Sound effects are easy to hear as well as the musical numbers and dialogue. Excellent.
