Movie Review: Hide and Seek
Jan 28, 2005 - Lynn Barker
Hey, somebody tell hot, usually blonde pre-teen actress Dakota Fanning that she looks like an Adams Family member in this movie! Christina Ricci as Wednesday comes to mind.
In Hide and Seek, nine-year-old Emily Callaway (Dakota Fanning) goes into depression and withdrawal when her much loved mom Alison (Amy Irving) commits suicide. Trying to get his daughter to come back to the world of the living, dad David (Robert De Niro) a psychologist, moves from busy Manhattan to the upstate New York countryside for some downtime.
David and Emily get a welcome into the isolated community by a quirky local sheriff and some weird next door neighbors. Hot divorcee Elizabeth (Elisabeth Shue) comes on to David and Emily makes it clear she's not welcomed. A new imaginary friend named Charlie becomes Emily's playmate and her mood improves until strange messages on the bathroom wall and other freaky happenings cause dad to wonder if this Charlie might really exist or is Emily's depression turning to madness? Will a visit from David's psychiatrist friend (Famke Janssen) help or hinder?
