Movie Review: Malibu's Most Wanted
Apr 18, 2003 - Lynn Barker
Is somebody getting even with Jamie Kennedy for the mean pranks he plays on his t.v. show? In his new film Malibu's Most Wanted , his Brad "B-Rad" Gluckman white rapper character is dumped in the hood. He'd better produce some decent rhymes or die tryin'!
B-Rad is a rich white boy who raps about keeping it real on the mean streets of Malibu, coming up with rhymes like "Livin' in the Bu, trying hard to survive/It's a struggle sometimes just to stay alive, yo." The mall is his ghetto and he's a member of ACC (Abused Children of Celebrities).
B-Rad's dad, Bill (Ryan O'Neal), is campaigning to be the next California Governor and the rapper and his crew are an big embarrassment. Worried that he's dead in the polls, dad follows his campaign manager Tom Gibbons' (Blair Underwood) idea to kidnap B-Rad and "scare the black out" of him with the help of two out-of-work actors (Taye Diggs and Anthony Anderson) posing as street gangsters.
B-Rad is never sure what is an act and what is real in the hood and, after he fights back, he's a legend and Malibu's most wanted.
This is a very uneven movie. A little B-Rad goes a very long way and this film is way too long to watch Jamie do his silly fish out of water shtick. There is a heart to the film with a message about following your dreams and there are some decent laughs but a majority of them are provided by the effective, if unlikely comedy team of Anthony Anderson and Taye Diggs playing theater-schooled actors who have to break out the books and study to be hip gangstas. And, after a while, even their comedy grows tedious.
