Director Jon Chu knew he had his hands full when taking on Step Up 2: The Streets. The ambitious young movie maker imagined making a film with the biggest, boldest and bravest dance sequences ever featured on the silver screen. With the upcoming DVD release of Step Up 2: The Streets, Teen Hollywood was given the opportunity to chat with Jon about his decision to hire dancers over actors, the selection process of the tracks that made us all bounce in our seats, and just how difficult it really was to film that epic dance sequence in the rain. Creating one of the most endearing right side of the tracks/wrong side of the tracks love stories in recent dance movie memory wasn't easy; so sit back, relax and find out what it really took to bring the magic of modern day dance from the film set to your television screen.
TeenHollywood: Dance has been a favorite aspect of films and musicals since way back in the day. What are some of your favorite dance-themed movies?
Jon: Singin' in the Rain. I like older movies, it's the stuff I grew up on. I'm the youngest of 5 kids, my parents own a restaurant and while they were at the restaurant we'd throw on these VHS tapes of Singin' in the Rain, West Side Story. We'd also watch all the Michael Jackson stuff, modern musicals like "Black or White", which premiered after "The Simpsons" on Sunday night. We'd record it, and then for days we'd watch it over and over to learn those moves.
