DVD Reviews: Thumbsucker and The Chumscrubber
Feb 11, 2006 - Lynn Barker
Yes, we are reviewing these two DVDs together because...with those wacky, similiar names, we just HAD to mesh these two teen angst-in- suburbia films into one fun coverage.
From Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Thumbsucker
Justin Cobb (Lou Pucci), is a teen who never grew up. He's introverted and has a thumbsucking habit that he just can't quit. His off-center, troubled parents (Tilda Swinton and Vincent D'Onofrio) and are at wits' end. His guru-style dentist (Keanu Reeves) hypnotizes Justin to break the habit, and he starts dosing on psych pills and experimenting sexually with a girl he's attracted to. The pills free the shy teen who then becomes a huge success on the school's debate team. However, in changing, Justin gives up a part of himself by becoming "normal" and pays a price.

Video: The 2:35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer looks clean enough although kind of soft. I didn't see the film in theaters but assume this is a tech choice not a transfer flaw. Colors aren't all that bright but this film is about a teen in a haze so.. it's appropriate.
Audio: Dolby Digital 5.0 format is fine. Music comes out of the surround speakers when it should and dialogue is undistorted. Fine for a small, personal film like this.
