Chronicle: Hot Guys with Power!

Chronicle: Hot Guys with Power!

In the new surprise hit movie Chronicle, a group of high school friends who wish they weren’t as awkward, stumble upon a cave hiding a mysterious crystal and, wow! Suddenly they can move things with their minds. Like most of us, the guys shoot video on just about all of their activities. Andrew, Matt and Steve really go video-wacko shooting their feats of crushing cars, flying and more! How fun would that be!?

Then… they start doing some cool but darker stuff. Let’s get revenge on the popular crowd. How about impressing that special girl? What would you do if this happened to you? Sure, you might put it on YouTube but morally, would you kick butt unfairly, illegally? Good questions.

Dane DeHaan as Andrew Detmer, Michael B. Jordan as Steve Montgomery and Alex Russell as Matt Garretty in "Chronicle." | 20th Century FoxThis film is shot in the “found footage” style that worked for Cloverfield but combined with characters with superhero powers.  Kinda unique.

Andrew (Dane Dehann) is an introverted, socially awkward teen guy who even before he becomes telekinetic, seems to be attached to his camera.  It’s the only thing he can connect with. He’s the ‘fly-on-the-wall’ guy who everybody in school kind of knows, but they either ignore or bully. He’s the creative loner.

Dane says  “When you’re given the ultimate power, and if you’re experiencing something that nobody has ever experienced, there’s a certain God complex that comes of that.” Most of the movie Andrew is the guy behind the lens. Dane did operate the camera for many scenes although the pros were recording too.

The two other members of the newly empowered high school trio are Andrew’s cousin, Matt (portrayed by Alex Russell), and campus king Steve (Michael B. Jordan).  Matt is a cynical, know-it-all, too-cool-for-school guy.  Alex says “What grabbed me about the project was that the concept is so surreal; it’s about teens with superpowers but at the same time it’s so ingrained with reality.  Matt couldn’t be more unlike Andrew and Steve. They would never have become friends under ‘normal’ circumstances but they become incredibly tight through their shared experience.”

Michael B. Jordan, whom you probably saw in TV’s “Friday Night Lights” plays Steve. “He’s everything a high school guy wants to be; the most popular, a top athlete, and is not far from becoming school president.  He comes into Andrew’s life like a guardian angel, pulling him into the school’s social scene, and Andrew starts to feel good about himself.Dane DeHaan as Andrew Detmer in "Chronicle." | 20th Century Fox
