The Cast of "The Other Guys" Goes Wild!
What's it like to chat with the stars of the wacky cop action comedy The Other Guys? Not what you would expect. Eva Mendes, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are alternately serious and totally pulling our legs in this fun interview taking place in a hotel in the heart of downtown L.A.
TeenHollywood: Is having partners in comedy like being partners as cops, watching each other's backs?
Will: No [laughs]. I feel like it’s more important to be cutthroat on a set and not look out for each other. That provides a certain tension. It makes for a horrible work environment, but boy does it pop on screen. [Eva is cracking up laughing]. We count lines [all comedians want the most lines by nature].
Eva: I had the least lines.
Will: The studios love our sets because we don’t serve food. There’s no Craft Services, no creature comforts. There’s no insurance.
TeenHollywood: Mark, you've had the most cop movie experience but not so much in comedy. How did that work for you?
Mark: I had a lot of fun making this movie. I felt very comfortable working on anything cop-ish or action. But, with all the other stuff, I just wanted to follow their lead. I've always wanted to do a comedy and to get an opportunity to work with these guys was a dream come true.
TeenHollywood: Will's character drives a Prius. Was that to be environmentally important or for was it just for comic impact? Also Will, you sing in the movie. Was that also your idea?
Will Ferrell: I think the choice of the Prius was that it was a sensible car. One [his character] Allen would drive. I think in an earlier script Mark's character drove a Dodge Challenger, total muscle car and a nice contrast to what I drove. As Adam’s working on the script, he told me to text him any random ideas I had. One of them was what if Terry and Allen are at an Irish bar and in a scene where information has to be given out, it’s his weekly folk singing night. One of the things Alan likes to do is sing Irish songs at a bar. I sent that to him and Adam wrote back: 'Going into the script immediately'.
Mark: He sang it beautifully though didn't he?
TeenHollywood: Yes. Eva, Mark's character Terry is dumbstruck about how hot you are and that wimpy Allen has such a hot wife. Does it amuse you in real life how hot guys think you are?
Eva: Wow! The truth is, the fame walks in the door before you do so you no longer know how men react to you but it's 'Dude, there's that famous girl from Training Day in the other room'.
Will: You are a hot lady though.
Eva: But I just don't feel like I get that genuine response anymore. I did this film with Will Smith a few years ago called Hitch and we went around the world promoting the film. We were in Brazil and he said 'I was down to the coffee shop and there were like five Eva's that worked there. In Brazil, you're not a big deal'. So that puts it all into perspective.
TeenHollywood: Will how does working on the 'Funny or Die' website play into the creative process for movies like The Other Guys?
Will: That’s just a kind of a sandbox for disposable fun ideas that we get to play around with. We don’t think about it again after we’re done.
Did anything from that site ever end up being in a movie?
Will: It hasn't happened yet.
TeenHollywood: Mark you do a little ballet dance in this. Did you learn those steps or was that a dance double?
Mark: I thought it would be easier than it was. I trained with a guy for a while but when it came down to it, I just couldn't. I did learn the steps, but in the end, it was a little to hard and we had a double.
TeenHollywood: Mark, you are a big Boston Red Sox fan so were you happy that your character got to shoot Yankee Derek Jeter? Was that your idea?
Mark: No, but I was certainly thrilled to do it [laughs]. I felt bad afterwards because he’s such a nice guy. We are going to screen the movie in Boston. I cannot wait. I just became a legend in Boston.
Will: I should send a shipment of L.A. Laker caps to those fans [Lakers beat the Boston Celtics recently].
TeenHollywood: That might not go over real well there. Was there a party trailer on set and which actor's was it? [laughter] Did anything wild happen on set?
Eva: I think we talk a good game but we're all actually pretty boring.
Will: There was a trailer called "the Party Trailer" and it was towed away after the 2nd day of filming because there was a lot of crazy stuff going on, human trafficking, a crystal meth lab. It was not good.
Eva: We burned it down.
Will: Humm, Mark and I were sitting around and said 'Let's kill a guy'. We're like [Michael] Keaton would be up for this. Michael goes 'Tell me when and where'. We all met underneath the Brooklyn
bridge.
Eva: It was just a little guy.
TeenHollywood: Will, was it pretty exciting to kiss Eva here?
Will: It was weird in that I couldn't believe it was happening to me.
Eva: Good save.
TeenHollywood: Favorite Scenes?
Will: I have to say Eva, Mark and I at the dinner table for the first time discussing our relationship.
Mark: I like that one too.
Will: The combination of Eva's earnestness and Mark's dumbfounded reaction to the fact that all of this could be possible [Will's character, a dork, has such a hot wife and doesn't even get how hot she is] and my character's nonchalance about it as well. That was a scene we could have filmed all day long. [Mark and Eva agree].
Mark: I could not touch my food because my stomach hurt so much [from laughing].
Will: In the living room where I introduce Eva as my wife and Mark goes 'Seriously, who is that?' That's not acting. Mark was dumbfounded.
TeenHollywood: Fave cop film of all time?
Eva: Michael Mann's Thief.
Will: Turner and Hooch.
Mark: The French Connection or Serpico.
Eva: Hey Marc, the movie we did We Own the Night. I love that movie.
Mark: I almost played the part Joaquin [Phoenix] played [Joaquin has the romance with Eva in the movie]. I f'd that up bad.
TeenHollywood: Eva, drama, action or comedy? Which is your favorite?
Eva: It's really about who you work with for me. I've ever had more fun than I've had on this set. We Own the Night was a different kind of fun but equally stimulating.
TeenHollywood: Will had you always wanted to play a cop as a kid?
Will: As a kid I'd walk around with a pair of nunchucks at my side but I guess that's not really law enforcement-related. It was a vigilante justice, Guardian Angel type thing. I built a jail in my closet and I'd incarcerate my family from time to time. No. I didn't have any dreams of being a cop.
TeenHollywood: Mark and Will, are you going to let your kids see this movie?
Will: This summer my six-year-old leaned over to me and said 'By the way, dad, I know what you do. I know you're in movies. Just so you know'. This movie is a little too old for him. I think he saw Elf when he was two or three and started crying when I had to float away on the iceberg.
Mark: I never let my kids see anything that I do.
TeenHollywood: Do they know you're an actor?
Mark: Oh yeah.
TeenHollywood: Mark, will there be an "Entourage" movie?
Mark: We hope to do one. But, we still have a season and a half on HBO. They could still mess it up before we can do the movie. We’ll see what happens.
