Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer's Vegas Romp
Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer, co-stars of July's romantic drama Beastly, are in Las Vegas to receive ShowWest's "Stars of Tomorrow" award tonight. We caught up with them very early this morning and learned that they both spent St. Paddy's day in Vegas watching different Cirque du Soliel shows; He, "O" at the Bellagio. She "Mystere" at Treasure Island.
If you are in Sin City, you might run into Vanessa in disguise doing the town. She just told us that she never really has and plans to do so. Vanessa also talks about the thrill she got from playing gun-totin' babe Blondie in the upcoming Sucker Punch movie and Alex tells us what a girl must not do if she wants to impress him. Both young stars are revealing what they were like at age 15.
Vanessa is super friendly and Alex is calling us "Darling" and giving us more examples of his Brit wit. We've congratulated both actors on their award so let's get to the good stuff......
TeenHollywood: Vanessa, Okay girl, you are in Vegas. Yesterday was St. Paddy's day. What did you do last night?
Vanessa: (laughs) I actually saw 'Mystere'. It was a lot of fun. I love the Cirque shows and I've never "done" Vegas. I've been here for tour but I've never actually walked around so, hopefully, at some point I'll get to. I've got a lot of disguises to wear.
TeenHollywood: We'll be on the lookout! How about you, Alex? Party much?
Alex: I did, but not the context you would think (hey, he's underage.. yeah). I went and saw "O" , the Cirque du Soliel show.
TeenHollywood: Your birthday is coming up next month. What are your plans?
Alex: I don't know. Are you secretly setting up a surprise party behind my back?
TeenHollywood: Hummm, good idea. Vanessa, Last year when we visited the Beastly set in Montreal you told me that you weren't planning to contribute any music to the film's soundtrack album. Has that changed?
Vanessa: Kind of but not really. I have been listening to a few songs with Daniel (Barnz, director of Beastly) and giving him my input. I'm really excited with where it's going but I'm not doing a ballad for it or anything.
TeenHollywood: Teens wanna know. Vanessa, what are you going to wear to the banquet and awards ceremony tonight?
Vanessa: It's AllSaints.
TeenHollywood: Beastly is self-contained.. it has an ending. If it catches on like the Twilight Saga do you see yourself doing more Beastly films? Can the story go anywhere?
Vanessa: I'm not sure where it would go. They would have to be unhappy for it to go on. That would kind of ruin things. You want them to stay happy and leave things where they are. But those Twilight films are great.
TeenHollywood: Both of you, what did you take away from shooting Beastly that you'll apply to your future career endeavors?
Vanessa: I learned a lot. I learned a lot about myself, about the way I act, a lot of how I can improve myself. One thing me and Daniel did was jump all over the place. We'd be on the same scene but it would almost be like a comedy show because he'd yell something out, like "angry!" and I'd do the lines angry. He'd yell "happy", I'd do the lines happy, jumping from one place (emotionally) to another. It was an exercise and was a lot of fun. The best acting class you'll ever get is actual work. It was fun.
Alex: I took away trust. Trust with my director. I've never actually trusted a director before. I put all my trust into this man; Daniel Barnz. He made this film amazing.
TeenHollywood: Who were Vanessa and Alex at age 15? Any idea you would be where you are today?
Vanessa: God, no. I think this is the first time I've thought back. Fifteen is like six years ago, that's crazy! It can't be. I'm not getting old! (we laugh). I was home-schooling and I had the premiere of my first major film Thunderbirds and nothing really happened after that. I was kind of sitting around waiting for stuff to happen.
It's scary in-between at 15. You don't know what's happening with yourself, with your body, with your life, your career. It's the place where you're like (desperate voice) 'I just don't know!' That's where I was, definitely.
Alex: I was just more naive about the things that I had; the experiences and now I appreciate them a lot more.
TeenHollywood: Did you keep anything from your wardrobe or from the set of Beastly?
Vanessa: I can't remember. I can't think of anything right now.
Alex: Absolutely! I kept Neil Patrick Harris's eye glasses and my big coat. I was trying to sneak the motorbike into cargo on the plane but they weren't having any of that (he's kidding).
TeenHollywood: Did you wear the make-up off set and scare or surprise anyone?
Alex: Well, I didn't have any friends make it to Montreal to visit me but I did have my dad come up. He was on set the whole time. But he saw it for the first time when we were in L.A. and we were testing out the make-up so he kind of got used to it.
TeenHollywood: What was the most challenging scene in Beastly for each of you to do?
Vanessa: The last scene in the movie when something happens that is very tragic. Daniel had me crying and sobbing for fourteen hours straight and at the end of the day I was like 'ooo, I just wanna go to bed'.
Alex: Probably the scene where I'm sitting on the couch watching my dad (an anchorman), doing the news feed. It's the turning point where I start to care for people. It was hard because I'd been up for thirty-six hours before shooting it.
TeenHollywood: Geez, it sounds like you guys were worked to death...but recovered! Speaking of tough work, Vanessa, did you actually pass out during the training for Sucker Punch? True or was it just super physically difficult?
Vanessa: No I didn't pass out but I've thrown up and cried. When you are training with Navy Seals, it doesn't get much harder than that.
TeenHollywood: Was it fun learning how to use a gun?
Vanessa: That was the most empowering thing a girl could ever do. Honestly, it's so much fun. I'm telling all girls to go to a shooting range and go through a few rounds and I promise you, you'll never get a bigger thrill.
TeenHollywood: Whoa, we're gonna watch out for you from now on! So, lightening up, what music are both of you hooked on right now?
Vanessa: Kasabian.
Alex: I like to listen to the Kooks. They're also an English band. They're cool.
TeenHollywood: Alex, how do you personally identify with your character Kyle and then how with the beast?
Alex: I would love to say I had some kind of connection with Kyle but apart from the fact that I played him, me and him are completely different. I don't even have the same dress sense as him. He's too cool for me. Too cool for school.
For the beast, apart from being shy and awkward in difficult situations, I don't have much in common there either. The big thing for me is when I shaved my head and put on the make-up, I kind of embarked on becoming like him.
TeenHollywood: (before Vanessa is on the phone) What little thing does Vanessa do that drives you nuts? And what little habit does she have that you find charming?
Alex: I don't know because she's very good. She keeps herself to herself. She listens to her music (between scenes) so there's nothing I can say.
TeenHollywood: In general, what was it like working with her?
Alex: Great. She's a professional. She's so good in this movie. I'm really excited for everyone to see her in it.
TeenHollywood: What one thing could a girl who is trying to get close to you do, that you would find "beastly" and unacceptable?
Alex: Ooooooo, great question! If people are mean. Sometimes, to get someone's attention, they're mean to you. I don't like that. I like it if someone just comes up and are like 'hi, how are you?'. Pretty much hate stuff like (Valley Girl accent.. I'm not kidding) 'hey, Oh my God, you're sooo ugly'. That's "beastly".
TeenHollywood: That's horrible! You are soooo not ugly... um, unless you were wearing the Beast make-up. What's next for you both?
Vanessa: Sucker Punch is out in 2011. Right now I'm just looking for that next project. I'm not sure if I want to do a comedy, an action film a drama or what.
Alex: I've also got to say "pending". Not sure yet.
TeenHollywood: Is there a type of film that you want to make sure you include in your career?
Alex: I want to do different genres. But, I'd love to direct one day.
TeenHollywood: Who would be your dream co-star?
Alex: Michael Fassbender. I don't know him but I saw him in Hunger when he plays Bobby Sands and he's great! (Michael will star opposite Alice in Wonderland's Mia Wasikowska in a new Jane Eyre film!)
