Blu-Ray Review Duo: "Jennifer" and "Summer"

Blu-Ray Review Duo: "Jennifer" and "Summer"

Guys always ask why girls screw with their heads. Well, after watching the new Blu-Rays of both (500) Days of Summer, a quirky and fun romance co-starring adorable and eccentric Zooey Deschanel as a free-living office worker and Jennifer's Body, starring pin-up hottie Megan Fox as a cursed teen gal chowing down on the guys in her life, we are no closer to the real answer but we've certainly been entertained by this diverse Blu-Ray duo!

Here's our take.....

From 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

"500 Days of Summer" - Blu-Ray 2-disc pack | 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment500 Days of Summer - Blu-Ray 2-disc pack

In this relationship comedy, Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a greeting card writer who would love to be an architect. He's a romantic and wants to meet "the One". New office worker Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel) seems to fit the bill but their relationship has more ups and downs than a roller coaster gone off the tracks! Will these two end up together?

Special Features: This two-disc Blu-Ray set contains some extras that are just as quirky as the film. "Commentary" by Director Marc Webb, the writers and actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt is pretty lively. “Lost Days of Summer: Deleted and Extended Scenes” contains 9 scenes.. worth a watch with or without commentary track.

“Not a Love Story: Making ‘(500) Days of Summer’” is the basic making-of featurette that is fun with interviews with director and cast. "Summer at Sundance" tracks the cast and crew to the film festival. "Audition Tapes" is fun although not tapes of Zooey or Joseph.  You get some storyboard art in "Summer Effect" and “Reality/Expectation” with optional commentary track from Director Marc Webb.

“Music Video: ‘Sweet Disposition’ by The Temper Trap” is cool if you like the sound. “Conversations With Zooey and Joseph” is quite fun as they handle various filmmaking topics. Worth a watch. “Filmmaking Specials” further breaks down the project covering casting etc. Interesting.

Our Fave: Or, in this case, Faves... are "Bank Dance", a very cute and well-danced musical number directed by Webb in which Joseph and Zooey show off their dance skills as totally different characters who fall in love during a bank heist. Just a hoot, kinda sweet and well done.

We also loved “Mean’s Cinemash: ‘Sid and Nancy/(500) Days of Summer‘” a short film starring Joseph and Zooey gender-bending as the iconic violent film couple Sid and Nancy. Zooey plays Sid, and it's an extra hoot to see Joseph playing Nancy in a blonde wig and black bra! Quite hilarious.

Disc 2 is the digital copy of the film for your electronic media pleasure.

Wrapping Up: Most teens through college level gave this film the big thumbs up for being "real" and original as it jumps around, out of sequence telling the tale of the ups and downs of love; both humorous and heart-breaking. It's kind of a warped journey but one well worth taking and this Blu-Ray is the way to go! Well worth adding to your collection.

"Jennifer's Body" - Blu-Ray Theatrical and Unrated Versions | 20th Century Fox Home EntertainmentJennifer's Body - Blu-Ray Theatrical and Unrated Versions

If you think Zooey messed with Joseph's head in "Summer", then you'll love the boy-centric damage caused by hot Megan Fox in this gory chiller written by pop culture fave Diablo Cody (Juno).

Fanboy pinup of the moment Jennifer (Megan Fox) is that high school uber-bitch you love to hate. Her mousy (hey she's beautiful but doesn't know it) BFF is Needy (Amanda Seyfried) who follows Jennifer around like a loyal puppy. The duo hits a bar rock show after which hot lead singer (Adam Brody) and his demon-worshiping band abduct Jennifer to sacrifice her to the demon in charge of making rock bands mega-popular!

But, big whoops! She's supposed to be a virgin sacrifice and Jen is no such animal. So, the sacrifice backfires bigtime as Jen is turned into a man-eating (literally) succubus/demon who is out after poor Needy's boyfriend (among everything else in pants). Will Needy step up and fight back?

Special Features: a ton!  The "J's-Bod" Blu-ray comes with a digital disc that has the director's extended cut of the movie. Kinda unusual and awesome. "Commentary Tracks" - two of them..one for each version of the film. Theatrical cut has Diablo Cody and director Kathryn Kusama and is a giggly, gurl-friendly listen. On the Extended Cut you get director Kusama only and the track has long blank segments. She only comes on to tell us the differences between the two forms of the film.

"Deleted Scenes"- there are six of them that add to the plot a bit. Worth a watch. The "Gag Reel" is just a few goofs and on set stuff. Not that great. In "Jennifer's Body: The Dead Pool" you get a short making-of focusing on the scenes in the big fight sequence at the spooky abandoned swimming pool. The effects are cool, including one of Jen as a mega-monster that didn't end up in the final film.

"Video Diaries" are behind-the scenes with crew and cast on set and are kind of silly. Writer Diablo's is okay. Guys will go ape for "Megan Fox is Hot", an aptly-named fast-moving peepshow of Megan looking sexy. "Megan Fox Peer Pressure PSA" is 40 seconds of Megan.. she says a "bad" word. "Fox Movie Channel Presents 'Life After Film School" is from TV with Diablo Cody giving advice to film school grads. The advice is pretty good so this is worth a watch.

Our Fave: Cuz we write and aren't panting after Megan, we liked the "Life After Film School" feature.

Wrapping Up:  This Blu-Ray is packed with features and the movie is a fun little girl-revenge horrorfest that will probably be a cult classic. There are some clever lines and Amanda Seyfried is quite good in it as the shy girl turned fighter for her man! Well worth a rental or a buy for horror fans or fans of Diablo, Megan or Amanda.
