Movie Review: Zombieland
When you are one of few humans left in an America overrun by zombies, who-ya-gonna-call? You're on your own so you'd better cowboy-up and hit the road!
In the comedy horror-rest Zombieland, survivors meet-up and beat-up on some very well made-up zombies. All the film's lead characters are named after their hometowns. Young, geeky but cute Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg of Adventureland) is trying to get from Texas, where he was in college, to Ohio to see if his parents are still human, the undead or just.... dead. Tallahassee (a fun, head-busting Woody Harrelson) has nothing else to lose and is just wandering the highways in his hot SUV searching for the last existing Twinkie (a symbol of normalcy for him....don't ask). Hot Wichita (Emma Stone) and her little sis Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) run con games on remaining humans to survive and get to a California amusement park that represents one of the few good times in their childhoods.
On the road, the gang of misfits forms the closest thing to a family as they creatively crack zombie skulls, take out frustrations on pottery, find a truck full of Sno-balls instead of Twinkies, meet a still human Hollywood icon, fight zombies in the aforementioned amusement park and, oh yeah, Columbus and Wichita fall in luv! The film is hilariously narrated by Columbus as he gives us much-needed zombie survival rules like "work on your cardio", "limber up", "tie your shoelaces" and "always check the back seat".
Although there is no real driving through-line to the film's story (no desperate need or race against time to get from point "A" to point "B"), there's something for everyone here; movie gore, kick ass action and great "kills" for horror fans, a young love story, some serious, actually touching moments and the best horror movie humor since Shaun of the Dead. The acting isn't bad either! The slo-mo opening titles are both creative and hilarious. Production values; sets, camera-work, costuming and make-up, are all top notch.
The funniest scenes in the film involve a famous actor with serious comedy chops and are worth the price of a ticket alone. Woody Harrelson's Tallahassee is a great funny version of Mad Max as he wanders the debris-strewn highways in search of some Twinkies instead of a stash of gas. Jesse and Emma's characters make a delightful odd couple and what could be cooler than a now teen Abigail Breslin lock 'n loading a shotgun while explaining the intricacies of "Hannah Montana" to her new "family"?
Go see Zombieland! If you are squeamish at the sight of horror blood, close your eyes during the actual zombie bashing. You'll still get a solid kick out of the film.
For horror, humor and humanity.... 4.5 out of 5 stars!
