The teen pop sensation played a short set at Beckman High School in Irvine, California - the result of a prize won by student Alison Kaprielian in an MTV-sponsored contest.
Cyrus and MTV bosses chose to honour the youngster for her efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer.
The high school dance team provided Cyrus with a backing troupe for the New Year's Eve show.
