The "Infinite" Kat Dennings

Beautiful 22-year-old actress Kat Dennings looks a bit like a younger Angelina Jolie. You might have seen her recently as one of the misfit sorority sisters in The House Bunny or as the quirky love interest for the Anton Yelchin character in Charlie Bartlett. Starting Oct. 3rd, you can catch the gorgeous and talented Kat playing Norah in the funny, romantic Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist opposite Michael Cera.

Kat plays Norah Silverman who doesn't like to let people know that she is the daughter of a very famous record producer. She's out of high school and college is ahead but Norah isn't sure what she wants or who. She knows she's fed up with her untalented boyfriend who is just seeing her to boost his recording career. When she meets Nick (Michael Cera) it's certainly not love at first sight but he grows on her as the two spend an adventuresome night searching for a rave where their favorite band "Where's Fluffy" is playing.

We got a call from Kat when she was at the recent Toronto Film Festival, relaxing in her hotel room with her mom. Dennings has been blogging since January 2001, and has since also transitioned into video blogging on YouTube. We like this gal. She's very real, edgy and just fun as she talks about teen angst, her films, music she loves and what a guy should never do it he doesn't want to tick her off! Check this out....

TeenHollywood: Your blogs on your website say you've been attacked at home by various insects and we know that you love fuzzy wuzzy animals. Do you think you are just an Earth Mother type to whom all living things are attracted? Is that a good or bad thing?

Kat: [laughs] God, I hope not. I'm screwed if that's true. I love animals but spiders being attracted to be is not good. They're not warm and fuzzy. If I had a kitten infestation, that would be awesome.

TeenHollywood: You were home-schooled so do you feel you missed a lot of the usual teen-aged clique angst or did you have your own whacked teen problems?

Kat: I always had plenty. I think teenagers always have problems no matter what; no matter if they're in school or not. It's just their nature. I had a very rocky teenage-hood. I feel I was very awkward. [to her mom] No, mom! Not you! My mom's staring at me like 'what are you talking about?' I had a circumstantially lovely teenhood. It's just that I was very awkward and insecure. I had a hormone infestation if you want to call it that.

TeenHollywood: Do you feel that like the character Nick, that we should all take a mental health day and what would you do on yours?

Kat: If you could see me now, I'm wearing a bathrobe and have no shoes on. That's kind of part of my mental health day. I would just stay home and be with my cat and watch movies all day. That would be the best!

TeenHollywood: Did the cast get to hang out and do anything when not shooting or was the shoot just too fast for personal time?

Kat: I'm still really good friends with everyone and Ari Graynor (who plays Norah's BFF Caroline) and I are best friends. We're pretty inseparable still. But Michael's trailer was hoppin'. We were in there all the time playing video games and eating snacks. It was great. He had Tiger Woods' Golf. The boys were obsessed with it. I don't know why. When is golf exciting? They were really into it.

TeenHollywood: Did you and Michael have fun on set? He seems like a super-huggable, cute dork. Is he or is he totally different?

Kat: He's really a good guy and really nice and smart. He's not a dork at all. I wouldn't say he is. I think he's just a decent human being. If a decent human being is a dork then I want only to be friends with dorks!

TeenHollywood: I agree! Which was more fun, The House Bunny all girl cast or this cast and why?

Kat: 'Nick and Norah' was more fun in every way. With 'House Bunny', it was a difficult situation. We were all wearing wigs. We were in constrictive clothes. We all had some weird kind of thing. It was hard. We couldn't run around. We had to stay in our area. There were a lot of paparazzi around because of Katherine [McPhee] and Rumer [Willis]. We couldn't even go around.

TeenHollywood: Are you more like the "Bunny" Mona character or the Norah character?

Kat: Oh, much, much more like Norah. I remember saying closer to when we made the movie that she was exactly like me and then I realized, as we keep going further away from it that I'm totally nothing like her.

TeenHollywood: Except that you like music?

Kat. Oh, I love music. And, I look just like her.

TeenHollywood: Yep you do. Your site has a list of your musical faves but right now, who have you just discovered that you are wild about musically?

Kat: I'm always listening to the same music. There's this new artist named Johnny Flynn (country/blues/folk). He's really cool. He's English and he uses instruments that are kind of old. His music is really unique. I really like him a lot. I'm listening to him a lot right now.

TeenHollywood: We don't hear about you all over the young Hollywood party scene. Is that a conscious decision for image or do you just not enjoy that sort of clubbing scene?

Kat: You'll see a picture of me going to Trader Joe's (L.A. area grocery store) or something.

TeenHollywood: In bunny slippers...

Kat: Yeah. That's not even a joke [laughs]. Exactly. I don't enjoy parties and all. If it's part of my work, I'm happy to do it but, other than that, I don't find it fun. Fun for me is not that.

TeenHollywood: What should a guy in your life never do if he doesn't want to tick you off?

Kat: I remember when I was a vegetarian, my boyfriend at the time was not and he would eat like a hamburger and smoke a cigarette and then kiss me. It was the most disgusting thing. I guess the cigarette thing would be a real [turn off]. I don't smoke.

TeenHollywood: Have you dated someone who, you learned, just wanted to use you for career advancement or something like Jay Baruchel's character does in the film? How do you handle that?

Kat: God, I don't know who could advance any career by hanging out with me. I credit myself with having pretty good radar for good people. I'd be more likely to meet people like that [users] out at clubs and places like that. When I meet people at Trader Joes, that's when we can start talking. "Do you want the last melon?" "No, you can have it".

TeenHollywood: Would you date a guy who drives a beat-up Yugo like Nick?

Kat: I definitely would although I wouldn't want to go on the freeway with them for fear of my life. I would actually worry about their attitude toward their health. I dated someone for a very long time who didn't have a rear-view mirror in his car. It was troubling. He thought he didn't need it and I tried to tell him that it was a key part of a vehicle. My parents didn't let me actually drive with him.

TeenHollywood: Have you ever gone out with someone who won't stop talking about his Ex like Nick does in the movie? Or even a gal pal who won't stop. What do you do?

Kat: I'm pretty sure, if my friend is going to tell me about her ex, it's going to be a conversation that's gonna take all day and so I commit to that day being about that. It's good. There's a time and place for everything. I try not to go out....ever. I just avoid the whole thing if I can but if it's my best friend and they're having a problem, they're always welcome in my bathrobe town.

TeenHollywood: There is this gross wad of gum in the movie that actually gets passed around.. like a running gag. What's with the odyssey of the gross gum? Everyone in my screening was going 'ewwwwwww'.

Kat: I know! I love that. I love when an audience has a unison gross out 'ahhhhhh' moment. They talk to the screen. That was in the script. That was a great device.

TeenHollywood: Let's get serious. Do you think teens should join the fight to save the earth from global warming?

Kat: I think it might be the most important thing to have on our minds. It's our planet. People don't realize that that's it. If something happens to the planet, we're all dead. I think that kind of education is extremely important. I'm conscious of it and if the new generation is a more conscious generation, then we're in good shape.

TeenHollywood: Your friend Ari Graynor got to play a lot of really funny drunk scenes. Did you envy her because that would have been fun to play or were you more happy with the Norah role?

Kat: I could never do what Ari did there. She's the most amazing drunk girl I've ever seen and it wasn't easy either. Doing something that well isn't easy. She had a lot of challenges. She's a person you want to keep watching what she's doing. That's rare to want to keep watching a person be drunk. I didn't envy her. I was glad I didn't have to do that.

TeenHollywood: Ultimate dream co-star?

Kat: I would love to work with Bill Murray one day. I would love to work with Steve Martin, David Bowie somehow. And I'd love to work with Angelica Huston.

TeenHollywood: Can you talk about your role in the upcoming Robert Rodriguez movie Shorts?

Kat: I play Stacy Thompson, the lead kid's older sister. The script is bananas. Go see it. Take younger kids with you but bring your friends too. It will appeal to adults. I read the script and thought 'I've got to do something in this. This is amazing'. (note: story is about citizens of a small town thrown into chaos by the arrival of a wish-granting rock...not kidding).

TeenHollywood: Give me your pitch. Why should teens and early 20-somethings go see Nick and Norah?

Kat: Because if you love to be alive you will go see it. It improved my life making it and when I saw it, my mood vastly got elevated. I think everyone so far who has talked to me and has seen it, it's made them happy. So, if you like being happy then go see it. It's not going to pander to anyone. It doesn't talk down. It's just great. A really good film.

We agree.
