Brittany Snow Gets Revenge!
There's this mega-popular guy at school who is working three or four girls at once and each thinks she's the only one! Sound familiar? Every high school and college campus has at least one of these guys. They get away with murder cuz they are soooo hot. In John Tucker Must Die, Brittany Snow plays the new girl in town who overcomes a shy nature to dive in and help the local gals get some revenge! She'll make Mr. Hotshot fall for her...then dump him!
Brittany has come a long way from her role as prim Meg Pryor in "American Dreams", the TV series about the turbulent 1960's. The blonde actress played a much less "prim" girl on the racy "Nip/Tuck" and was a teen rebel in the Vin Diesel comedy hit The Pacifier. You can catch Brittany later on as teen queen Amber Von Tussle in the movie adaptation of the Broadway play "Hairspray" in which she gets to sing and dance.
In Beverly Hills, recently, Brittany looked super summery in yellow and white spaghetti strap top and white pants. Her gold necklace had a big blue stone to match her eyes dangling from it. With her usual fun, chatty charm, she told us about her drummer boyfriend, working with cute Jesse Metcalfe, dangerous cheerleading stunts, being a high school nerd and the sleepover-style fun she had hanging out with her femme co-stars Ashanti, Sophia Bush and Arielle Kebbel.
TeenHollywood: So are you anything like your character in this movie?
Brittany:
Actually a lot. Definitely, in middle school and high school, I was a lot like Kate. And it's kind of stereotypical to say, like, "Oh, I was the loser in high school." But I really was not that popular. I hadn't discovered hair gel yet, and I had braces, and I had curly hair. I was just not that cute. I kind of was one of those girls that just wanted to fit in so badly, and I thought that the senior girls were just the most popular girls and so beautiful and they were cheerleaders, and I wanted to be them.
TeenHollywood: Looking at you now, that's hard to believe but a lot of really gorgeous women weren't that hot in high school.
Brittany: Yeah. And I was in TV production class with all the popular girls, and they hated me. They were just like, "Freshman, go away." And so I was so concerned about everyone liking me, but I just didn't fit in. So I kind of brought that to the Kate character; just really trying, but not wanting to try too hard. You want to be yourself, but you don't know who yourself really is. It's just like a whole bunch of emotions that go on in high school, especially when you're trying to find your friends. And so I can completely relate to the character, and I loved playing basically who I was a couple years ago.
TeenHollywood: We hear that the scene in which you are at the top of a cheerleading pyramid and fall was real. Is that true?
Brittany:
Oh my gosh, you don't even understand! Dangerous is not even
like close. I had never been a cheerleader before in my life so when they told me I had to be on five rows of people and they didn't really even have me practice or anything, it was really weird and so scary. I actually wound
up emotionally upset because I was so scared. I think I practiced one day. The girl who was my stunt double went up to show how it was going to look and she fell!
TeenHollywood: Ow! Well, I guess that didn't instill a lot of confidence in you did it?
Brittany: No but they were like 'Well, that's not going to happen to you!' And I was like, 'Are you guys serious?' Luckily, she was completely fine, but she hurt her back, and I was just like, 'I can't believe this. I've never done this in my life'. But then at the end, it was really fun. I got up there and then I fall and they shot it so it was perfect but it's really scary up there.
TeenHollywood: What about having Jenny McCarthy as your mom in this? She's a pretty hot mom.
Brittany: She is so amazing. I gave an interview right after I shot John Tucker, and they were like, 'Who are you inspired by right now?' And I was like, 'Actually, Jenny McCarthy. She is an amazing woman. She knows exactly who she is. I have so much respect for her. She's not trying to be anything except who she is. She's an amazing mother, she's funny, she makes you feel at home like with just being who you are. Like in a second, she can make you laugh'.
TeenHollywood: Why do you think there was such a good connection between you two?
Brittany: Because she was going through a lot during that time, and I was going through a lot, and we had a lot of scenes where it was just her and I like driving away so we were just in the car, and she would turn around and say 'I have a secret to tell you. You can't tell anyone'. And we would like share secrets. It was just was so cool! I can't even call her like a mom or an aunt, but she became like a sister. She's just one of those people that makes you feel so comfortable.
TeenHollywood: In real life, would you go after the John Tucker type, or his cute, more studious brother Scott Tucker?
Brittany:
I would definitely go for Scott. I kind of love the guy who is just like kind of quirky, and there's something a little off about him. And you don't really know what it is, but it's so endearing and cute. I'm not one of those girls to be with the guy who's like ridiculously good-looking, but I love things that kind of make people special.
TeenHollywood: But you look hot so the handsome guys might approach you. What would you do?
Brittany:
I was never one of those girls growing up, even lately, to go for the guy who all the other girls wanted, really, because I just never thought I could get a guy like that. And so I don't know. I mean, every now and again I surprise myself and the guy actually likes me, which is so weird. But they're just crazy maybe. [laughs] Jesse Metcalfe is ridiculously good-looking, but he's still really fun and cute, too. So he's an exception to this rule.
TeenHollywood: You don't have to give a name, but is your super-gorgeous boyfriend in the business?
Brittany: He's not. He's a drummer. He's actually outside. [laughs]
TeenHollywood: Cool. How did you meet him?
Brittany:
Actually, this is how close friends I am with the girls in this movie. I met him through Arielle. She was doing a movie, and it
was her going away party, and he was sitting right across from me. So if
not for "John Tucker", and not for meeting Arielle, I would have never met
him!
TeenHollywood: Thank God for galpals! Ashanti was saying you got her autograph on the set of "American Dreams" where she played Dionne Warwick.
Brittany:
Yeah, I actually was a huge Ashanti fan. Like huge. And I
loved every single one of her songs, and was so excited when she was on
"American Dreams". And she played Dionne Warwick and she sang 'Walk On By' and literally, everybody could not stop talking about her for the whole rest of the season because she gave us chills when she sang the song. She was amazing. And so ever since then, I was like, 'Ashanti is just...she's like this goddess.' She's like this classy, like glowing, like confident girl, and I just gave her so much respect when she was on the show.
TeenHollywood: So you were like your character Meg, shyly asking for autographs?
Brittany: Yeah.
I was nervous to talk to her. I went up to her on "American Dreams", and I was like, [nervously] 'Hi, can I have your autograph?' [nervous giggling]. I walk away, and like her bodyguards are there and then
I got to work with her, and I actually told her that the first day. She's basically the most amazing girl ever, and it was really cool to see somebody who is so talented then yet be so gracious and just a real girl. So I love that about her.
TeenHollywood: In one scene, the girls are just hanging out eating pizza and playing video games. Was that reminiscent of the laid back vibe on set?
Brittany: The funny thing was on the set, it was exactly like it was in the movie. Basically, all of us, we were going through our own things, and we kind of just really bonded. I definitely call Arielle and Sophia like my best friends. And I definitely would call Ashanti my best friend, too, if she wasn't always in Japan or on tour doing her singer thing. We would have slumber parties all the time.
TeenHollywood: I think teens are curious as to what goes on at sleepovers where movie stars are involved.
Brittany:
Same thing. We had like pizza, and candy, and chocolate, and we were all sitting around and playing games. And Ashanti was in the corner writing a song. We were like, [whispering] 'This is so weird, Ashanti's
writing her #1 hit single and we're like right next to her eating pizza!
This should not be happening!' When I was going through a hard time[break-up with her longtime boyfriend] and Sophia was going through
hard times [divorce from Chad Michael Murray], Sophia would buy me like bouquets of flowers, and she wrote me little cards every day, and she would make me things, like little poems and stuff. I mean, ask any of the other girls, we got so ridiculously close, so it was really a special thing, I think.
TeenHollywood: There were some really cute baby pictures on the set that was supposed to be your home. Were those really your baby pictures?
Brittany: Yes!
I can't believe you saw that! It's so funny. When I saw
the movie, I was like, 'Whoa, my mom's going to be so proud that the
shot that she had to have when I was six years old actually made it in a
movie.' They put them strategically right behind like everybody's head,
you know? And I was like, 'Oh my gosh, there I am in the bathtub. There
I am with that sundress on. Oh my gosh, it's so embarrassing!' But yeah,
it was really me, all the pictures.
TeenHollywood: There were old pictures with you and Jenny in them that can't be real.
Brittany: No. They would put my baby picture with like Jenny McCarthy's ten-years-ago picture or whatever. And they would Photoshop them together. And we were like, 'We look so weird!' And she's actually in Cancun with a friend, and she's holding a beer or something. And they would Photoshop that out, and they would put my face in. And I was like, 'Mom, what were we doing in Cabo'? [laughs].
TeenHollywood: What's next for you?
Brittany:
I'm, right now, in Toronto, actually, doing Hairspray, and I
just came back the day before yesterday. I play Amber. I'm the blonde one who makes Tracy's life miserable. I sing. I've been singing and dancing since I was three, so this is like my three favorite things all rolled into one movie. So it's exciting. It's really cool.
TeenHollywood: Have you seen the original?
Brittany: Yes, I saw the original, and I saw the play on Broadway like three or four times, because my friend Laura Bell actually played Amber on Broadway. And so I called her up and I was like, 'I'm playing you in the movie!' Michelle Pfeiffer's my mom. I don't think I could get much more excited. She's like my idol so it's going to be worse [nervous giggling] than me meeting Ashanti!
