Kanye West and Maroon 5's Adam Levine Clubbing in L.A.
Friday night, your TeenMusic rep was at Club Largo in L.A.'s Fairfax District enjoying the music of mega-talented musician/composer/producer Jon Brion. Jon can play multiple instuments and, as a one-man-band, creates amazing, on the spot tunes. He can also put his own unique twist on a Beatles song that just blows you away. Lately, Jon has been scoring movies and producing Fionna Apple, Rufus Wainwright and, most recently, Kanye West.
For the last set of the night the packed audience was treated to a big surprise. Kanye West, fresh from his appearance earlier in the evening on the televised concert for hurricane relief, joined Jon on stage suddenly. Wearing the same white pants and conservative navy sweater I had just seen him wear on my TV screen a few hours before, Kanye, who had been sitting at a table in front of me (who knew? It was dark!), took the mic and, while Jon played, rapped out more of his, in my opinion justified, anger at the Bush administration's treatment of the tragedy on the Gulf Coast.
After the cheering subsided, a cute guy on my right, wearing a fisherman's sweater, hopped up on stage to join the guys in some Beatles and a Sting song. Oh, yeah, that was Adam Levine, frontman for Maroon 5. Some of the bandmembers were with him! I've got to start looking around at these clubs instead of staying glued to the talent I came to see.
What a treat! Impromptu, unrehearsed freestyling like this just proves what excellent musicians and entertainers these guys really are! When I left, Kanye was headed back to the Mondrian hotel and Adam and pals were back at their table listening to Jon again. Only in L.A. !
