Lavigne and Whibley Aren't Engaged, Says Management

Avril Lavigne and Sum 41 star Deryck Whibley are not engaged despite a flurry of media attention this week regarding Whibley's supposed proposal.

Sum 41 manager Greig Nori told Canadian music network Much Music that Whibley pretended to propose to Lavigne knowing full well that he was being watched by paparazzi.

Management also released an official statement. "Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 is not engaged," read the report. "Deryck and his friends are constantly followed by paparazzi. The recent 'breaking news' that has been misconstrued around the world exemplifies the media's constant invasion of people's personal lives and reporting of unsubstantiated rumours and/or appearances."

Lavigne, who turns 20 on Sept. 27, has been dating Whibley for less than a year. Despite the denials of an engagement, the Canadian couple did recently buy a multi-million-dollar house together in Santa Monica, Calif.
