2002 'Rock The Vote' Awards
The 2002 Rock the Vote Patrick Lippert Awards will air February 26th in LA. With performances by Nelly Furtado, The Goo Goo Dolls, and Glenn Lewis, and honoring Destiny's Child and Dave Matthews Band for their charity work over the past year, Rock The Vote proves to be an awards show with class and integrity.
Founded by AIDS victim Patrick Lippert in 1990 in response to a wave of political attacks on freedom of speech and artistic impression, Rock The Vote is an event that encourages young people to make changes in their world.
Past recipients of Rock the Vote's Patrick Lippert award are Neil Young, Wyclef Jean, Sting, Bono, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Queen Latifah, Chuck D., Hootie & the Blowfish, Sheryl Crow, L.L. Cool J., Steve Young, Beastie Boys and Salt-n- Pepa. Dave Matthews Band and Destiny's Child will be awarded this year.
Dave Matthews will receive the 2002 Patrick Lippert Award for his work with the Bama Works Foundation. Dave Matthews established the foundation to carry out the band's commitment to charity. From the Amazon Rain Forest to community parks, Bama Works has given to numerous non-profit organizations, community programs and charities. The Dave Matthews Band has also performed at several benefit concerts for the American Diabetes Organization, The Boys and Girls Club of America, Children, Youth and Family Services, Feed the Children, Hope House and Camp Holiday Trails among others.
Destiny's Child will receive the 2001 Patrick Lippert Award for their community activism. The girls have put their money and time towards organizations such as LIFEbeat, The Wyclef Jean Foundation, Houston's St. John's Methodist Church, The Race to Erase MS: Keeping the Dream Alive and the Candie's Foundation, which aims to lower the rate of pregnancy among U.S. teenagers by raising awareness about its consequences.
"Rock the Vote has always celebrated the artist as activist. This year we are honoring Dave Matthews and Destiny's Child for embodying the spirit of community activism that is being embraced by youth across America," said Rock the Vote founder and record industry executive, Jeff Ayeroff.
