Movie Review: Summer Catch

"Summer Catch" is your typical Freddie Prinze Jr. movie. It involves his character, Ryan Dunne, getting romantically involved with Tenley Parrish, played by Jessica Biel. A romantic comedy involving baseball, beer, girls, boys, and plenty of laughs, "Summer Catch" is mainstream fun.

Tenley is a rich girl who lives on the "right side of the tracks" and Ryan is a poor guy who lives, that's right, on the "wrong side of the tracks." Ryan's only hope for success is pitching well on his baseball team, or else he'll be cutting grass with his dad for the rest of his life instead of pitching in the major leagues. While cutting grass one day, Ryan notices beautiful Tenley in a bikini, a sight that causes him to mow more lawn than he's paid for. Tenley notices the aspiring big-league pitcher checking her out and romance begins when they later meet at a local bar.

it should be said that Billy "Bru" Brubaker (Matthew Lillard) adds plenty of comic relief for this movie, who, as the catcher for the local baseball team, was a lot of fun to watch.

Essentially, "Summer Catch" is about Ryan overcoming his baseball problems and his family and friends trying to help him, which got a little stale. The ending was weird and would never happen in real life. However, this movie is a good date movie and Freddie fans may be particularly interested to know that Prinze Jr. bulked up for this role. For the apprehensive guys dragged to the theatre, be assured that Summer Catch features baseball, beer, and Biel in a bikini.

That said, Freddie should really consider getting away from the romantic teen comedies and trying something else. We give "Summer Catch" 2.5 out of 5.
