Interviewing Top Model, Kim Smith
Discovered at sixteen while watching a friend at a modeling contest, Kim Smith has become the freshest face in the modeling industry.
The contracts come fast and furious when big names like Guess?, Maxim, Glamour, Andrew Marc and Abercrombie & Fitch clamber to have
you in their next ad or magazine, and, not a year into her modeling career, Kim had found her place on top, traveling to exotic locations, meeting famous people. It was a new and exciting experience.
Kim was creating a buzz in 2000 when boy band 'N Sync were shooting their Bye, Bye, Bye video. A integral part of the video would be a car race along a twisting highway as a sporting vixen playfully sends the boys towards certain disaster. Many girls lined up to play the part but all auditions ceased when 'N Sync settled on Kim Smith as their temptress. The result is music-video history.
The Bye, Bye, Bye exposure only added fuel to Kim's fire and a potent career was in the making. But Kim was still in high school with the very real pressures of graduating in good standing. She was also a golfer, playing on the high school team and, despite her modeling future, was even thinking of a pro golfing career.
Despite her variable career leanings, Kim Smith considers herself an artist most of all. Therefore, her modeling career could take many turns in the near future. We are entering an age where models become entertainers, where entertainers become models, and it all converges into one.
Recently landing a modeling contract with Victoria's Secret, it is hardly daring to suggest that Kim Smith could soon be everywhere TVs are watched, movies are played, and magazines are sold.
Kim recently took some time from her demanding schedule to answer our questions about her life as America's newest glamour girl. This is what she had to say...
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Kim, strange as the question may seem, I want to know, do you like the way you look?
Well...I hope that this answer doesn't sound conceited...but I guess I feel like I look OK.
What problems have you discovered in finding success so early in life?
It's been really hard as far school goes. I'm a senior, so I end up missing out on fun senior activities. And then there's the catching up on schoolwork, let me tell you that's no fun.
Tell me about shooting Bye, Bye, Bye with 'N Sync, did you enjoy this experience?
It was a blast. The guys were amazing to work with. They were so respectful and helped me not to be so nervous. The director Wayne Isham was awesome too. He made me feel so comfortable...I hope that I get to work with Wayne again.
Did you really get to drive that car (from the 'N Sync video)?
Yes I did. The BMW Z3...It was fun.
What have you learned about yourself in the past year?
I think I've been able to build on my character. I stress out sometimes, when I have to work and miss schoolwork, but I feel like I've gotten the handle on it now.
When it comes to my work, I give it my all. I want my clients to be satisfied with what I give them.
Do guys have trouble talking with you? ...Or maybe you have trouble talking with guys?
If the guys know me it's Ok. If they don't it seems as if they're trying to work up the nerve sometimes, but once they do, they realize that I'm down to earth.
You're a golfer. Any plans to pursue golfing professionally once you're done high school?
I'm not sure, it would be great. But to turn pro I would need to focus really hard, and with the modeling and acting it would be difficult.
What are your hobbies?
Golf, of course. I learned how to kneeboard this past summer, so I look forward to doing more of that soon.
What is your hidden/quirky talent?
Nothing too quirky, but hidden, I sing...my agent wants me to record a single. I don't know about that.
What do you see when you look at pictures of yourself from a recent photo-shoot?
I'm very critical of my work. I try to find my weak points and better those.
Do you think that by being a model, you're contributing to the materialistic nature of our culture?
I guess one could take it any certain way. As for me, modeling is a job that takes a great deal of dedication. As a model my job is to sell clothing or product and that's all.
I understand you're an aspiring actress, why are you drawn to acting?
I think it's important to be complete. I am an artist and acting is another way that I can express myself. I admire professional actors. It's so difficult. I want to try it to see if I can expand my career.
Where do you see yourself in two years?
Hopefully doing what I enjoy most, and making a difference, being a positive role model.
