Hoku "In a Heartbeat"
Hoku takes on her first television guest starring role on an upcoming episode of Disney Channel's new original drama series "In A Heartbeat."
Hoku will be in Toronto on July 19 to film scenes for the episode titled "A Night To Remember." Hoku's episode of "In A Heartbeat" premieres in October 2000 on Disney Channel, just in time for Halloween.
In this special Halloween episode of "In A Heartbeat," Brooke (Lauren Collins) and her friend Nick (William Greenblatt) are excited about attending that night's Hoku concert. Meanwhile, Brooke is also in charge of organizing the upcoming EMS fund raiser but, so far, her efforts to get some great items for the silent auction have fallen flat. Brooke's inspired idea to get Hoku's autograph as an auction item nearly ends in disaster when she and Nick get locked in a backstage stairwell and miss the concert.
Hoku recently achieved the rare honor of a debut gold single for her Top 5 charting single "Another Dumb Blonde" from the "Snow Day" soundtrack album; and when the accompanying video aired for the first time on MTV's "TRL" (Total Request Live), it hit the Top 10. Hoku was recently voted Favorite New Female Singer in a Nickelodeon poll. In May 2000, she released her self-titled debut album, "Hoku" (Geffen Records), aptly named, too, since "hoku" means "star" in her native Hawaiian.
The album features diverse tracks including the feel-good songs "What You Need," "How Do I Feel" (aka The Burrito Song) and "Oxygen," the emotional ballad "Nothing In This World," and just her voice and acoustic guitar accompaniment in the powerful "You First Believed," which she also wrote.
That same month, she was also invited to perform in Monaco at the World Music Awards. While Hoku follows in the tradition of young female singers with uncompromising girl-power attitudes wrapped in upbeat dance pop, she also follows in a famous family tradition: the seventh of 10 children, and the only one to follow her legendary father, Don Ho, into show business.
